When using quality materials and construction, wood fences are a very effective means of containing horses. However, horses are known for chewing the rails—especially the top rail—which results in problems both with the fence’s lifespan and the horse’s health. Easily prevent wood chewing by installing an electric wire spaced away from the rail on the inside of the fence.
If properly constructed, all-wood fences can have low annual maintenance costs. However, depending on the climate you’re in, rotting can occur at ground contact locations and on unpeeled rails, limiting the fence’s lifespan.
