Solar Gate Systems —
Reliable Automation Without the Cost of Running Power
For entrances where grid power is 300 ft away or more — or where running a power line simply does not make sense — solar automation is a practical, proven solution. Custom aluminum gates, SystemPost™ pre-wired, sized for your cycle count and property.
When Solar Gate Automation Makes Sense
Running a power line from the nearest panel to a remote entrance can cost several thousand dollars in trenching, conduit, wire, and electrical labour — often more than the gate itself. Solar automation eliminates that cost when the site conditions are right.
Solar is typically the right choice when:
The nearest electrical panel or service is 300 ft or more from the gate
Trenching across a driveway, laneway, or landscaped area would be disruptive or costly
The gate will cycle fewer than 10 times per day (lower cycle counts are easier for a solar system to maintain)
An area around the gate is open and unshaded will provide the ideal amount of power for your gate
A backup battery is acceptable for cloudy periods — modern solar gate systems include battery storage
How a Solar Gate System Works
A solar gate system has four main components: a solar panel, a battery, a gate operator, and the gate itself. The solar panel charges the battery during daylight hours. The battery powers the operator each time the gate cycles. A properly sized system maintains the battery charge through normal Ontario seasonal variation — including shorter winter days.
System Fencing will help you size the solar package based on:
- Your expected daily cycle count
- Your panel’s sun exposure and orientation
- The operator’s power draw per cycle (swing operators draw less than slide operators)
- Whether you want a single panel or a dual-panel array for higher reliability
All aluminum gate panels standard. SystemPost™ pre-wired post is included and configured for the solar operator and battery connection point.
SystemPost™ — Pre-Wired for Solar
The SystemPost™ is especially valuable on solar installations. In a conventional solar gate install, the electrician or installer is routing wire from a panel mounted on a post through conduit down to the operator and battery — often in a location without easy access.
With the SystemPost™, that wiring is already done. The solar panel mount point, conduit runs, operator connection, and battery housing position are all integrated at the factory. Your installer connects the panel leads to a finished wiring point, not a bare post.
- Solar panel mounting point integrated into post design
- All conduit pre-routed for panel, battery, and operator connections
- Battery housing location planned and pre-wired at the factory
- Eliminates improvised field wiring on remote installations
Our Solar Gate Process
Share your gate opening, approximate distance to the nearest panel, expected daily cycles, panel sun exposure, and site photos.
We recommend the right operator, panel wattage, battery capacity, and array configuration based on your cycle count and sun exposure.
Your aluminum gate and SystemPost™ pre-wired solar post are built in our Ontario facility to your exact specification.
Supply-only or full install. On solar projects, the SystemPost™ makes the installation dramatically simpler and faster for your installer.
Common questions
Solar Gate Questions
Yes, with correct sizing. Modern solar gate batteries provide multiple days of reserve capacity. Shorter winter days reduce charging time, but a properly sized system — with the right panel wattage and cycle count — maintains adequate charge through a normal Ontario winter. We size every solar package for your specific daily use. Do not buy the cheapest one you can find if going solar, needs to be sized for the Ontario market.
It depends on the operator, panel size, battery capacity, and sun exposure. Most residential solar gate systems are sized for 10 - 20 cycles per day. Higher-use sites may require a dual-panel array or a larger battery. We confirm suitability during the quote process.
The battery provides reserve capacity — typically 3–5 days at normal cycle rates. Most solar gate operators also include a manual release so the gate can be operated by hand if the battery is fully depleted. We discuss backup options during the quote.
It can, but sliding gate operators typically draw more power per cycle than swing operators. Suitability depends heavily on your daily cycle count and sun exposure. We assess this specifically for your site.
A complete solar gate package includes your custom aluminum gate panel, the SystemPost™ pre-wired post with solar conduit routing, the gate operator, solar panel, battery, and all required mounting hardware. Low voltage does not require an electrical contractor.
