AES Intercom, Cellular & Access Control Systems

AES makes audio and video intercom systems built specifically for gate automation on rural, estate, and equine properties. They are our primary intercom recommendation because every product in the AES range is designed from the ground up for outdoor, unmanned gate use — not adapted from a residential doorbell platform.

The difference shows up in real-world use: AES systems handle long cable runs, outdoor temperature swings, and the kind of intermittent daily use that a farm or estate gate sees over years of operation. They also offer something most competitors do not — a cellular intercom option that works without Wi-Fi, without a wired connection at the gate, and without a stable internet connection at the property. For remote entrances and rural properties, that matters considerably.

Cellular Gate Intercoms — No Wi-Fi Required

Cellular is the most reliable connectivity option for rural gate installations. A cellular intercom communicates over the mobile network — the same network your phone uses — which means it works wherever there is cell signal, regardless of what is happening with your router, internet service, or power at the house.

For rural and estate properties, this is a meaningful advantage over Wi-Fi dependent systems:

  • The gate might be 400, 600, or 800 ft from the house — often outside reliable Wi-Fi range
  • Rural internet service can be inconsistent, and a dropped connection should not mean a non-functional intercom
  • Cellular operates on a dedicated SIM — internet outages at the property do not affect gate access
  • No Wi-Fi extenders, outdoor access points, or network infrastructure needed at the gate post
  • Cell signal at the gate location is all that is required — most rural Ontario properties with usable cell coverage qualify

How Cellular gate intercoms work

A cellular gate intercom has a SIM card inside the gate panel — typically on a low-data M2M (machine-to-machine) plan through a carrier. When a visitor presses the call button, the panel places a call or sends a data packet over the cellular network to your smartphone. You answer, speak to the visitor, and trigger the gate open from your phone — exactly as you would with a Wi-Fi system, but without any dependency on local network infrastructure.

Monthly data use is minimal. Gate intercoms transmit short audio or video calls and occasional status updates — a low-data SIM plan is all that is required. Some AES cellular models allow the system to call a standard phone number directly, meaning you do not need an app installed to answer — the intercom rings your mobile like a regular call.

Cellular intercoms are generally more reliable than Wi-Fi intercoms for rural gate applications. They have one dependency — cell signal at the gate — rather than three: the router, the internet service, and the Wi-Fi range to the gate. For any property where the gate is more than 150 ft from the house, cellular is worth serious consideration.

AES Cellular Gate Intercom

AES Cellular Intercom
GSM / 4G LTE Gate Intercom

AES offers a cellular gate intercom panel that communicates over the 4G LTE mobile network via a built-in SIM. It is designed for exactly the kind of rural and estate installation where running Wi-Fi to the gate is impractical or where internet reliability at the property is inconsistent. The panel calls your mobile directly — no dedicated app required to answer, though the AES Connect app adds video and remote open capability when available.

Network

4G LTE cellular via built-in SIM — no Wi-Fi or router required at the gate

How it calls you

Calls your mobile number directly, or via AES Connect app with video (model dependent)

Gate trigger

Open gate by pressing a key during the call, or via app — no separate remote needed

SIM plan

Low-data M2M SIM — minimal monthly data use; standard carrier plan

Backup

If cellular signal is lost, the gate can still be opened by remote, keypad, or loop detector

Power

Powered from gate operator supply — no separate power run to the intercom panel

Compatibility

LiftMaster, Nice, and all major operators via relay output

SystemPost™

Panel wiring and relay output pre-routed inside the SystemPost™ on swing gate packages

Best for

Remote entrances, long laneways, properties with inconsistent internet, any site without Wi-Fi at the gate

The AES cellular intercom is the option we recommend when the gate is far from the house, when rural internet service is unreliable, or when the buyer simply does not want to manage Wi-Fi infrastructure at the gate post. It is the lowest-friction access solution for a remote rural entrance.

AES Oypn — Wired Intercom

AES Oypn
Video Gate Intercom

The AES Oypn is a hardwired video intercom system designed for reliable residential and estate gate access control. Using a direct Cat6 network connection between the property router and the intercom, the system delivers stable communication, video access, and remote gate control without relying on inconsistent wireless signals or cellular service

Communication

Hardwired Cat6 network connection between the router and intercom system for stable, reliable communication with optional wireless (150ft) if permits

Range

Recommended for installations within 300 ft of the network source. Additional network switches may be required for longer distances. Can be remotely triggered from anywhere in the world

myQ App — LiftMaster Remote Gate Control

myQ App
LiftMaster Smartphone Gate Control

myQ is LiftMaster’s smartphone platform for remote gate monitoring and control. Any LiftMaster operator with a myQ-enabled receiver connects to the myQ cloud so you can open, close, and check gate status from your phone — anywhere, any time. It operates alongside physical remotes, keypads simultaneously.

Platform

iOS and Android — free app

Function

Open, close, and check gate status remotely

Notifications

Push alerts when the gate opens, closes, or is left open

History

Activity log of all gate events with timestamps

Guest access

Share temporary or scheduled access with others via the app

Connectivity

Requires Wi-Fi at the gate via myQ gateway, or LTE on compatible models

Combined use

Works alongside remotes, CAPXS keypad, and AES intercom simultaneously

For property owners who travel or manage multiple locations, myQ adds meaningful visibility and control. Confirm the gate is closed from anywhere, grant access to a delivery without being on site, and review who entered and when.

Remote Controls — Up to 1,000 ft Range

Range

Up to 1,000 ft line-of-sight — appropriate for long rural and estate driveways

Protocol

Encrypted rolling code — cannot be cloned or intercepted

NICE Long-Range Remotes
1,000 ft Range Gate Remotes

Standard gate remotes operate within 100–300 ft — not enough for most rural property driveways. System Fencing specifies Nice long-range remote transmitters rated to 1,000 ft, so the gate begins opening before the vehicle reaches the entrance. Encrypted rolling code — cannot be cloned or intercepted.

Form factor

2-button and 4-button options. Visor clip or keychain.

Multiple users

Program multiple remotes to the same operator — one per vehicle or user

Compatibility

All swing and slide operators

Combined use

Active simultaneously with myQ app, CAPXS keypad, and AES intercom

On a 600 ft laneway, a standard 100 ft remote means you arrive at a closed gate. A 1,000 ft remote means the gate is already opening as you reach it — which is the practical expectation for any automated rural entrance.

Free Exit — Automatic Exit Without a Remote

A loop detector is a wire coil embedded in the driveway surface or a probe on the side of the driveway that senses a vehicle’s metal mass and triggers the gate to open automatically. It is the cleanest exit solution for a gated property — no remote needed, no app, no code.

  • Properties with multiple vehicles where not every driver carries a remote
  • Service vehicles, farm equipment, and tradespeople who exit regularly
  • Entrances where reversing to reach a keypad is impractical
  • Any installation where exit automation is desired alongside full entry control

Loop detectors are embedded during driveway construction or cut into an existing paved or gravel surface. Conduit routing and placement specifications are included in our pre-construction documentation for any installation where exit detection is planned.

Common questions

Access Control & Cellular Questions

How does a cellular gate intercom work?

A cellular intercom has a SIM card inside the gate panel that connects to the mobile network — the same network your phone uses. When a visitor presses the call button, the panel calls your mobile number or sends a notification via the AES Connect app. You answer, speak to the visitor, and press a key or tap the app to open the gate. No Wi-Fi, no router, and no internet connection at the gate is required — only cell signal at the gate location.

Is cellular or Wi-Fi better for a rural gate intercom?

For most rural and estate properties in Ontario, cellular is more reliable as long as you have good cell service. A Wi-Fi dependent system requires the router to be working, the internet service to be up, and the Wi-Fi signal to reach the gate. A cellular system has one dependency: cell signal at the gate location. If your gate has usable 4G LTE coverage, cellular is the lower-maintenance, more resilient choice.

What does the monthly cellular plan cost for a gate intercom?

AES cellular intercoms use a low-data M2M (machine-to-machine) SIM plan. Data use is minimal — the system transmits short calls and occasional status updates. Plans typically range from $5 to 12 per month depending on the carrier and plan selected. (would be an add on to your existing plan) We can advise on suitable Canadian carrier options during the quote process.

Can I answer my gate from my phone when I am not home?

Yes — with either the AES cellular intercom or the AES Oypn DECT wireless system paired with the AES Connect app. The cellular model calls your mobile directly over the carrier network. The Oypn model uses the AES Connect app via your home internet connection. Both let you see the visitor and open the gate remotely.

How far away does the gate remote work?

System Fencing specifies Nice long-range remotes rated to 1,000 ft — so the gate is already opening before you reach the entrance on a long rural driveway. Standard remotes typically operate at 100–300 ft, which is not practical for most rural properties.

Can I use a remote, a keypad, a cellular intercom, and the app at the same time?

Yes. All access methods — 1,000 ft remote, CAPXS keypad, AES intercom, and myQ app — can be active simultaneously on the same system. Different people use whichever method suits them. A farm with staff, deliveries, and owner remote access will often use all four simultaneously.

Choosing the Right Automation Package

The right operator depends on four things: gate type (swing or slide), gate weight, expected daily cycle count, and whether you need solar. The right intercom depends on how many entry points you have, whether you need video, and whether Wi-Fi is available at the gate.

01
Tell us your gate type and size

Swing or slide, opening width, expected gate weight (we calculate this from your spec).

02
Tell us your daily cycle count

Approximate number of opens and closes per day. This determines operator duty cycle and solar suitability.

03
Tell us your access requirements

Remote only, keypad, intercom, video, app access, or a combination. We recommend the right AES model.

04
We spec the complete package

Operator, intercom, keypad, loop detectors, and the SystemPost™ pre-wired to integrate all components.

Gate Automation Questions

What is the difference between LiftMaster and Nice for gate automation?

Both are excellent. LiftMaster has broader dealer support across North America and a strong track record in residential and commercial applications. Nice is known for premium build quality and is popular in estate installations. We carry both and will recommend the best fit for your gate weight, cycle count, and budget.

Do I need an intercom system?

Not necessarily. If the gate will only be used by people with remotes or keypad codes, an intercom is optional. If you receive visitors, deliveries, or contractors who need to reach you at the gate, an AES intercom adds significant practical value — especially on long driveways.

What is the SystemPost™ and how does it work with the automation?

The SystemPost™ is System Fencing’s pre-wired gate post. All conduit for the operator, intercom, keypad, and loop detectors is pre-routed inside the post at our factory. Your electrician connects to a finished termination point — no field wiring through finished columns.

Can I control my gate from my phone?

Yes. LiftMaster uses the myQ app, Nice uses the Nice Home app, and AES uses the AES Connect app. Each allows you to open, close, and monitor your gate remotely. The AES Connect app also lets you answer the intercom from your phone.

What happens if the power goes out?

All gate operators we supply include a manual release so the gate can be operated by hand during a power outage. Battery backup options are available for LiftMaster and Nice systems.

Not Sure Which Operator Is Right for Your Gate?

Tell us your gate type, opening width, and how the gate will be used — and we will spec the right automation package and quote you a complete SystemPost™ pre-wired system.
