These hoof shields are made of a unique thermoplastic material that softens quickly in hot water to a clear, soft putty. As it cools it rehardens into an tough, unbreakable & resilient plastic – in a time of 2-5 minutes.
Instructions for use
- Prepare tub of hot water – 145-165F or 63-74C – not boiling.
- Trim and prep hoof for shoeing. Shape shoe and set aside.
- Place one hoof shield in the hot water, and allow to heat for 1-2 minutes or until it turns completely clear.
- Remove from hot water using a wooden spatula or other relatively flat utensil to avoid warping the shield while in it’s softened state. Flip onto flat hand to begin shaping. Do NOT allow to fold over on itself in the hot water as it will adhere to itself!
- Lay the hoof shield on to the prepped hoof.
- Wet hands to prevent sticking while forming. Press the soft material into the sole and frog area of the hoof while maintaining the natural contour of the hoof structure and the original shape of the hoof shield. Do not press too hard. Material will naturally conform to the sole and frog anatomy with slight rubbing / massaging action.
- If desired, extra material at the heel can be folded to create a build-up for extra wear or higher heel effect. Excess material may be pressed and formed to fill any weak, cracked or missing areas.
- Trim excess overlap with common scissors while still sfot.
- Place the shoe in position and nail as usual.
- When the shoe is properly nailed in place, trim harderened hoof shield with a sharp knife and file the out edge to conform to the shoe.
