What Is a Swing Gate?
A swing gate opens by rotating inward or outward on hinges mounted to a post or pillar. It is the most common driveway gate style for rural properties, estates, and equine facilities — and for good reason. Swing gates are mechanically simple, visually strong, and available in a wide range of sizes and configurations to suit almost any entrance.
System Fencing manufactures custom aluminum swing gates in our Ontario facility. Gate can ship as a complete package with the SystemPost™ pre-wired post, internal post or 6×6 posts— so your local electrician connects to a finished unit, not a pile of loose wire runs.
When a Swing Gate Is the Right Choice
Swing gates work best when:
- There is adequate clearance for the gate to open inward or outward without obstruction
- The driveway grade across the opening is relatively level (steep upward slopes toward the gate can cause ground clearance issues)
- The entrance has stone, timber, or precast pillars that suit a hinge-mount installation
- The property has an existing fence or wall the gate needs to match in style
- The owner wants the most traditional, visually substantial entrance appearance
A swing gate is generally not the right choice when:
- The driveway slopes significantly upward immediately past the opening (the gate arc will contact the grade)
- The entrance is on a tight urban lot with limited swing clearance in front of or behind the gate
- The Site has driveway opening of over 23ft this is where a sliding gate would be more benefical.

The SystemPost™ — Why It Matters for Swing Gates
Optional automated swing gate package from System Fencing includes the SystemPost™ — a gate post with all wiring integrated at the factory before it leaves our facility. Wire, electrical connections, and operator wiring are all pre-installed inside the post. Your electrician arrives to a finished connection point, not a raw column.
For swing gates specifically, this matters because the operator is typically mounted to the post or inside a pillar, and field-wiring through a finished stone or precast column is difficult, messy, and expensive. The SystemPost™ eliminates all of that.

Common questions
Swing Gate Questions
It depends on the direction and degree of the slope. If the driveway slopes upward immediately past the opening, the arc of the gate may contact the ground as it opens. We assess this from your site photos and can recommend whether swing or sliding is the better fit for your specific grade.
We can fabricate double swing gates up to approximately 30 ft total width — 15 ft per leaf. For very wide openings, we will confirm the appropriate operator and hinge specification based on gate weight.
The SystemPost™ is our pre-wired gate post — all conduit and wiring is integrated at our facility before shipping. It is included on all automated swing gate packages. It makes installation faster and cleaner for your local electrician, and ensures consistent, code-friendly wiring every time.
